Special Education

The special education classes offered at Alcott School serve a range of children with developmental delays, communication, sensory and motor learning differences. The purpose of these special classes is to help each child achieve his or her potential. This is done by providing small, warm, supportive classes staffed by dedicated special education teachers, therapists, teacher aides and assistants.

The special education services are for children who:

  • Are 19 months through 4 years of age
  • May have cognitive delays, language delays, sensory sensitivities, fine or gross motor delays, difficulty interacting socially with peers
  • May have language and/or preschool skill levels below that of their chronological peers
  • May have a short attention span, be easily distracted, or very active
  • May have difficulty behaving appropriately in a group of peers
  • May have difficulty playing with friends

Please note that in order to qualify for these special education programs, children must be evaluated and found to be in need of service.

All Programs are  funded and regulated by the New York State Department of Health and Education and in Westchester County by the Westchester County Department of Health.  There is no cost to parents for the special education services  listed above.  Transportation is provided for eligible children.
