Alcott School provides
speech and language therapy as a related service for children enrolled at the
Alcott School locations. Most therapy is conducted using a "push in" model
enabling the children to benefit from services in their classroom learning
environment utilizing the materials the children use every day. This
approach results in the generalization of therapeutic goals into the child's
everyday life. Our therapists are specialists in language development,
PROMPT trained and utilize a variety of techniques as appropriate for each
child. Speech and language services at the Alcott School are provided by
NYS licensed speech pathologists and NY certified Teachers of the Speech
and Hearing Handicapped.

Alcott School provides OT
as a related service to children enrolled at the Alcott School. Each of
the locations has a sensory gym with suspended swings and large motor equipment
to capitalize on movement for learning. Our OT's are trained in sensory
integration therapy and the Therapeutic Listening Program. The school has
a Therapeutic Listening lending library for parents to borrow CDs for home
carryover of the protocol. The preschool version of the Handwriting Without
Tears program is utilized to target and strengthen prewriting skills. Many of
our 4 year old classes have weekly handwriting groups which are run by our
classroom OT's. The SticKids program aides our therapists in providing visual
representations of sensory diets set up for the classroom, home and community so
that parents, caregivers and teaching staff can help a child receive controlled
sensory input throughout the day. Therapists often utilize other
modalities that reflect their training including the Wilbarger brushing
protocol, How Does Your Engine Run, Brain Gym, SCERTS, Astronaut Training as
well as yoga. Throughout the year we host workshops for staff and parents about
various topics related to sensory integration and motor development, one of the
most popular is "Choosing the Best Toys for Your Child" which occurs at the
start of the holiday season (in conjunction with a fundraiser at a local toy
store). Occupational therapy services at the Alcott School are provided by
New York State licensed OTR's and COTA's.
