Mr. Andre's Class : October

October Newsletter

“Children are one third of our population and all of our future.”

 Dear Families,

The school year is off and running. The first month of school has been wonderful. We can see by the children’s smiling faces, hearing their laughter and conversations that they have been excited about school.

During the first few weeks we have been really focusing on the routines, procedures and structure in the classroom in order to promote free choice. The children have been learning how to care for their environment by practicing roll up a mat, walking around the work mat, pushing in their “danger chairs”, cleaning up after they are done with a work,  and using a soft voice. The purpose of spending the time on these things is for the children to have a strong foundation of the Montessori philosophy in regards to respect one another as well as the environment. In order for the children to be successful in a Montessori classroom we have to encourage them to use their independence.  This year you will hear a lot about Positive Behavior Intervention System (P.B.I.S) This will be our way of taking a positive look at children's individual behaviors and finding strategies to focus on the successful ways to uplift them and learn how to interact appropriately in society. It supports their social/emotional development which ultimately has a positive effect on their academic progress.  More details to come as the year progresses.

Some ways to foster your child’s independence:

· Allow children to put on their own shoes.

· Allow children to put on their own jackets.

· Have children carry their own school bags and lunchboxes.

· Dress children in comfortable clothes that they can dress begin to dress themselves.
